Xat is a graphic chat environment that allows users to create chat rooms which are represented as planets in a universe. The size of the planet indicates how many chatters are present and clicking on the planet takes you into the chat room. Xat provides over 1,700 freely available avatars which users can activate by entering the avatar's corresponding numerical code. There are also avatars designated for subscribers only.

Avatars taken from the character designs of "Batman: The Animated Series" are assigned codes 37 through 93. The avatars are faithful to the series' animation style and users can choose from three different avatars representing Batman. Avatars of Batman's allies, including Batgirl, Robin and Commissioner Gordon, are also available, but the series' villains make up the majority of the avatars. The selection of villains includes frequently recurring characters such as the Joker and Catwoman, as well as more obscure villains including Clayface and the Mad Hatter.
Loony Tunes Characters
Codes 508 to 564 are reserved for the characters from Warner Brothers' Looney Tunes cartoons. Popular Looney Tunes characters, including Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, have multiple avatars to choose from and chatters can also select more esoteric characters including Sam Sheepdog and Gossamer, the hulking orange monster in tennis shoes.
Avatars 783 through 1126 feature reproductions of Matt Groenig's "The Simpsons" character designs. Chatters can choose from multiple avatars for each member of the Simpson family as well as supporting characters including Krusty the Clown, Apu, Mr. Burns and Moe the Bartender. Non-character avatars include a giant doughnut and the twin cooling towers from the Springfield nuclear power plant where Homer is employed.
Codes 1131 through 1243 feature a selection of starships, cast members and equipment from "Star Trek" and "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Crew members from both series are represented and chatters can choose objects ranging from Starfleet rank insignia to equipment such as tricorders and phasers as their avatars. Ship avatars include the various iterations of the Enterprise along with familiar vessels including a Borg ship and a Klingon Bird of Prey.
Avatars drawn from George Lucas' original Star Wars trilogy are assigned codes 1244 through 1332, though the character selection is tilted toward Imperial characters, with more stormtrooper, Imperial soldier and bounty hunter avatars to choose from than avatars representing characters loyal to the Rebellion. Chatters can also choose ship avatars including X-Wing fighters, TIE fighters and the Millennium Falcon, along with a selection of droids and aliens.
Xat reserves a selection of avatars for subscribers, who may choose from 33 animated emoticons or Xat power avatars if they've purchased the associated power. Xat powers give special abilities users can employ in chat rooms and the associated avatars give a hint as to what the avatar's owner can do, such as the boot avatar offered to users who purchase the ability to eject other chatters from a room.
