According to Hallmark, more than 1 billion birthday cards are given each year in America. And while card manufacturers offer a wide variety of cards for every birthday, especially for turning 18 years old, sometimes you want to add a personal touch by making your very own card. Choose from many ideas to help the birthday girl or boy celebrate this life-changing day.

Finally an Adult

Eighteen-year-olds can't drink, but they are no longer minors. For a humorous take, point out how they're now eligible for truly adult activities, like jury duty, paying taxes and real prison. Find a picture of the birthday boy or girl and cut out the face. Then paste the face onto a member of a jury or a picture of someone on the top bunk in prison. Let him know he's emancipated, which means he can finally move out, go to college and graduate with an expensive degree, so he can move back home to pay off his student loans.

Eighteen marks the year young men and women become eligible to join the military in the United States. Point out that this makes America very lucky, that having someone with such strength and courage would benefit the nation. Or make a joke, writing something like, "Now that you're eligible to defend America, I'm moving to Mexico." Or point out that people love a man or woman in uniform.

In the United States, young men and women can legally vote when they turn 18. Point out that the birthday girl or boy can change the country. Include a joke in the card about how years of voting for "American Idol" has been training for the real thing. Or point out that the 18-year-old will help decide the next President.

Legal Activities

Turning 18 means young men and women can now do things that were previously illegal, like smoking cigarettes and purchasing adult magazines. Mention in the card that both are currency in prison, which is also now available to her. Or make a joke about how you know she's not old enough to drink, but these cigarettes and adult magazines should keep her busy.

Credit Cards

Make a card by writing, "Turning 18 means you finally get to partake in the most American activity..." Inside the card, write, "Credit Cards." Draw a picture of a credit card and write his name on it. Or make the front of the card as an American flag. Write the words, "Now that you're 18, you can use the two most American words:" Inside the card, write, "Charge It!"
