The first thing you do when you step out of the shower is reach for a towel. A towel rack or rod puts the towels right next to the shower and right where you need them. Basic towel racks consist of just one rod, hung between two hooks or pieces attached to the wall. Bathroom towel rack ideas include ways to add more style to the room and also add more storage.

Go Natural

For a rustic look, add tree branches to the bathroom and use those as towel racks. This Old House offers examples of metal pieces, including towel racks and toilet paper holders, with a nature-inspired theme. If you have access to an old tree or have tree branches falling down in your yard, use one of those instead. Inspect the wood carefully, looking for any signs or termite damage or rotting. Cut the branch down to a size appropriate for your bathroom, and strip the bark from the wood if you prefer a cleaner look. Two hooks hung near the shower are strong enough to support the rack. Use a smaller branch and additional hook for hand towels placed near the bathroom sink.

Use Hotel Style Racks

If you've ever stayed in a hotel, you may have noticed the racks that hotels use for towels and washcloths. Two different styles are used: stacking shelves and basic shelves. The stacking shelves include multiple shelves that hold towels of different sizes, hand towels and washcloths. In some cases, the shelves are staggered, which clearly shows what type of towel sits on each shelf. The basic shelves have one large shelf at the top and at least one towel rack hanging underneath. Use the upper shelf to store extra bath towels, or use the space to store beauty and bath products or to display a small collection, such as vintage beauty products.

Place a Rack Over the Door

An over-the-door towel rack is a simple way to store towels for future use. The towel rack has two curved pieces that fit over the door and won't keep the door from closing properly. Multiple rods hang from the rack, providing space to hang three to four towels. The bottom of the rack has stoppers that keep the rack from pressing against the door and potentially damaging the wood. Hang your towel on the bottom rod after use to quickly dry the towel for your next shower.
