To celebrate his success after releasing the true crime classic "In Cold Blood," Truman Capote threw a star-studded black-and-white masked ball. In 2009, Elton John hosted a black-and-white gala, while the San Francisco Symphony throws a black-and-white themed ball every year. Borrow a few of their ideas and throw a black-and-white party of your own.

Table Decorations

Set the mood for your black-and-white party with the table decorations. If you're throwing a fancy masked ball, like Truman Capote's, cover the tables with black velvet tablecloths trimmed in white or white tablecloths covered in black lace. For a more casual affair, such as a teen's Sweet 16 party, cover the tables with more youthful black-and-white checkered or polka-dotted tablecloths. You could also use pillar candles in black and white. Use white roses in your centrepieces or fill clear bowls with shiny black beads. Outfit place settings with black cloth napkins folded decoratively inside white teacups. Check your local party supply store for black-and-white party plates, cups and utensils. For a more funky-styled party, look for unique black-and-white table-setting pieces at local thrift outlets.

Venue Decorations

For a funky or teen black-and-white party, you could "paper" the walls with newsprint. Use paint-safe adhesive gum to avoid damaging your walls or the venue's walls. Start collecting newspapers well in advance. You could also add black and white to the walls by hanging swags of black velvet or white gauze. If you're on a tight budget, craft your own room accessories. Start with any basic dollar-store decor item and spray paint it black or white. Group objects together along shelves or on the buffet table for maximum impact. Spray empty vintage picture frames black and white, and then hang them on the wall for a classy but inexpensive look.

General Party Decorations

If you're throwing a black-and-white birthday party, decorate with plenty of balloons. Buy an equal number of black and white balloons, or buy mostly black, incorporating the occasional white balloon for visual interest; using mostly white balloons would create the same effect. For a child or teen party, hang black and white crepe-paper streamers. You can decorate with your party food too. Use only black or white foods, such as liquorice, white-icing covered confections and appetizers made with plenty of black olives or white cheeses.
