If you are trying to plan a unique type of party then you should consider holding a glow-in-the-dark party. When you plan a glow-in-the-dark party, be sure you keep the safety of your guests in mind. Turn on the lights in the room occasionally to check on everyone, and create activities that stress safety along with fun.

Black Lights

You do not have to limit your party to items designed to glow in the dark. Black light is created by using a bulb that produces light in the ultraviolet range. You can purchase UV bulbs for standard light sockets, or you can purchase a unit that has a long, narrow UV bulb that looks like a shop-light bulb. You can purchase black light bulbs or black light fixtures at a party supply store and at some home improvement stores. UV light will make white clothing glow and make colours like yellow and orange look neon. A black light glow in the dark party can help ensure a safe party, because you can light up the room in black light, get the effect you are looking for, and your guests will still be able to see to move around. Try creating black light drawings on white posterboard by using different coloured highlighters. The highlighters create unique effects when exposed to the blacklight.

Glow Sticks

Glow sticks are plastic tubes filled with chemicals that react together to produce light without heat. You break a glow stick in the middle and then shake it to get it to glow. They are useful in emergency situations and are used by the military and law enforcement, and for entertainment. The reaction is chemical, not radioactive. A glow stick will glow for hours, and they can be used for various glow-in-the-dark games and activities. Use glow sticks to play glow-in-the-dark catch or have a relay race in the dark that uses glow sticks as batons; or play a game of "hot potato," with the glow stick as the potato. You can also use clear plastic bowls for serving food, and set the bowls over glow sticks to make them light up. Keep in mind that while glow-in-the-dark devices such as glow sticks have many beneficial uses, their manufacture also has a high environmental impact and the chemicals inside them are not benign. Avoid skin contact with the chemicals, and do not ingest them.

Glow-In-the-Dark Paint

Glow-in-the-dark paint contains phosphor pigments which absorb then emit light and are considered safe. They can be used to help make your glow-in-the-dark party a success. To make the effect special, you should limit how much glow-in-the-dark paint you use. One idea is to play glow-in-the-dark bowling. Paint a toy plastic bowling ball with glow-in-the-dark paint, then place glow sticks in empty two-liter soda pop bottles to be used as pins. Get a black piece of cloth and put drops of the glow-in-the-dark paint on it, then hang it on the wall to create a star field for your party.
