The world of medicine changes at a breakneck pace, and nurses who have taken some time off can easily fall behind on the latest developments in their fields while their basic skills also grow a little rusty. To help RNs get back in the saddle, nursing refresher courses provide the education necessary to help them perform at the highest level.

To help nurses who've experienced a gap since their last period of employment, California State University San Marcos offers a two-part refresher course. In the didactic component, nurses study subjects such as patient teaching and infection control in a classroom setting, leading to a final exam. In the clinical portion of the program, nurses take part in "supervised hands-on patient care delivery," according to the school, working in an area hospital or clinic to gain practical experience.
