Dialysis, also referred to as nephrology, is a vital medical technology that artificially flushes excess fluids and waste products from the human body when it cannot do so through the natural means of the kidney system. Working under the supervision of medical doctors, dialysis technicians monitor and operate complex equipment while attending to patient needs. Several schools in Southern California offer practical training programs in the medical application of dialysis technology.

American Dialysis College

American Dialysis College has been offering practical hands-on training in nephrology since 1966. The current training program is designed for registered nurses (RNs) and licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) seeking additional qualifications in the area of kidney dialysis. This 192-hour program is 12 weeks in duration with coursework held weekly on Fridays and Saturdays. Course topics include the principles of dialysis, blood and uremia monograph interpretation and hemodialysis nursing. Students are well prepared to seek entry-level employment in a variety of settings, including hospitals, medical centres and outpatient clinics. In addition to Pasadena, the American Dialysis College has locations in Mission Hills and Glendale.

Students receive comprehensive training in both the theoretical foundations of end-stage renal and kidney failure as well as practical skills training in the operation of dialysis equipment and patient care. Students also receive hands-on instruction by observing advanced procedures and working with patients during supervised external internships in professional clinical settings.

A dialysis subspecialty training program designed specifically for experienced RNs who wish to pursue a career in outpatient hemodialysis is also available. In addition, the Dialysis Training Institute offers programs in cardiac life support, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and medical assisting.
