Two classifications exist for electrical software tools: commercial/educational and research-oriented. These software packages provide computer-aided engineering tools for determining solutions to complex issues. Engineers and scientists use these tools in conjunction with academic journals, scientific experiments and prototyping to provide solutions for a variety of electronic or power-driven applications. Some software tools assist in research and others are sophisticated enough to provide simulations for problem resolution. There are also electrical software tools that provide output files for further mathematical or vector-oriented analysis.

Power Flow Tools

Research and calculate power-flow solutions and receive a series of output files for analysis using the software UWPFLOW. Analyse power flow, continuation power flow and optimal power flow with PSAT (Power System Analysis Tool), PSAP (Power System Analysis Program), PST (Power System Toolbox) and PAT (Power Analysis Toolbox).

MATPOWER is a useful simulation tool for both researchers and educators for addressing power flow and optimal power flow issues. For educational purposes, EST (Educational Simulation Tool) expands knowledge of power systems in general. For short circuit and harmonic capabilities, use PCFLO and PCFLOH, since these features are not found in most other load flow programs.

Analyse voltage stability problems with VST (Voltage Stability Toolbox) to address control issues plaguing electrical power systems. Use SPS (SimPowerSystems) to compute accurate state-space relationships for electrical models. MATEMTP (Matlab Electromagnetic Transient Program) and ATP (Alternative Transient Program) provide knowledge and simulation for analysis of electromagnetic transient phenomenon. For complex networks and control systems, ATP is the digital program of choice because of its extensive modelling and computation features.

Commercial Software Tool Options

PSS/E Optimal Power Flow (OPF) provides network analysis above and beyond the traditional load flow analysis software tools. For quality studies, use PSCAD as a system simulator for all types of power systems. DigSilent PowerFactory is a calculation software tool providing analysis of industrial, utility and commercial electrical power systems. For a highly interactive power system simulation package, use PowerWorld Simulator. For algorithm prototyping, use MATLAB – SIMULINK with companion software to meet your needs. EMTP-RV has a graphical user interface with a sophisticated simulation of electromagnetic, electromechanical and control systems in multiphase electrical power systems. NEPLAN software handles electrical transmission, distribution and industrial networks. Cape, ETAP, SKM Power Tools and EDSA are additional commercial options available as well.
