Mirror magic tricks
Dice and mirrors make great magical props. (red dice reflection image by jimcox40 from Fotolia.com)

Magic remains one of the more fascinating skills a person can display---appearing to bend or break the laws of reality before the keen eyes of an audience. Many people know about tricks with cards, coins, wands, rope and lovely assistants, but there aren't as many popular tricks involving mirrors. However, with the right tools and instructions, a magician can take a simple reflective flat surface and turn it into a teleportation device or make it disappear altogether.

Silk Through Mirror

This magic trick takes an ordinary silk handkerchief and a seemingly ordinary mirror. The magician starts to rub the silk on the mirror, and the handkerchief is seen to pass through the solid reflective surface without breaking it. The framed mirror included with this trick is 12 x 16 inches and comes with a simple red piece of silk. The silk can be switched out for other props such as a magician's sponge ball or other piece of cloth. As of June 2010, it is available for £48 through The Magic Warehouse.

Flexible Mirror

This trick is recommended for magicians age 13 years and up, mainly because of the use of sharp objects. A mirror is displayed to the audience and can be examined closely. It is then placed within a frame and placed within a cloth bag. The magician then takes a large darning needle and shoves it through the bag and, seemingly, the centre of the mirror. Several more needles are shoved through, and then the magician bends the mirror and frame in half with his bare hands. After it is straightened out, the mirror and frame can be removed and passed around again for further examination. The kit comes with complete instructions, mirror, frame, needles and bag. It is available through Abracadabra Magic.

Dice Mirror Illusion

An easy-to-perform trick, the Dice Mirror Illusion has the magician place a die with red and black spots on a regular mirror. What the audience will notice after a moment is that the die's reflection has colourless spots. The magician picks up the die and replaces it once more on the mirror, but now the real die has colourless spots, while the reflection shows the colours. The kit comes with dice, mirror and complete instructions and is available through Think Geek.

Dice Through Mirror

The magician produces a black wallet with a small square cut in the centre of both sides. Opening the wallet reveals a mirror filling the interior of the wallet and blocking the holes on either side. The wallet is closed and a regular die is produced. It is set in the top hole as the magician holds the wallet flat. Then the die appears to melt through the mirror and drop to the floor through the bottom hole. This trick kit comes with the mirror, wallet, die and complete instructions and is available through MJM Magic.
