Science Projects About Bird Food

Birds are beautiful creatures---that's why they are good subjects for science projects. According to, bird food, bird eating habits and food preferences are some of the interesting aspects worth studying about birds. Bird food experiments and science projects will help you get to know these creatures a little better.

Do Birds Prefer a Color of Food?

Test how and if birds are affected by the colour of their bird food by using several bird feeders of the same colour, size, type and material; neutral or light-coloured bird seeds and food colouring, according to Science Bob. You also need, of course, an area birds frequent to place your bird feeders. Use the food colouring to make bird seeds with different colours, then place an equal amount of each colour of bird seed in each of the bird feeders and observe for a few days or weeks. The longer the duration of the experiment, the more accurate the results.

Do Birds Prefer Insects or Seeds?

According to, insects and bird seeds are both considered bird food. Test whether birds prefer one type of food over the other. You need a number of identical bird feeders, different bird seeds and different insects as bird food. You will need four to six bird feeders that are the same size, shape and colour. Place equal amounts of insects ( suggests mealworms) in half of your bird feeders and put equal amounts of seeds in the remaining half. Check the feeders every few days and record the results.

Does Feeder Color Affect Food Habits?

Follow the relationship of the colour of the bird feeders and the amount of food birds consume, an experiment based on a study of ruby-throated hummingbird colour preferences conducted by Richard S. Miller and Richard Elton Miller and listed at Jstor. Are birds attracted to bright- or dark-coloured bird feeders? You need identical bird feeders, the same bird food and spray paint. Paint your feeders with different colours and put an equal amount of the same bird food in each feeder. Put the bird feeders in the birds' eating area and leave and observe for a set period of time.
