Decorating the fireplace mantel for Christmas can become a tradition with some families. The convenient thing about Christmas fireplace mantel ideas is that you do not need a functioning fireplace for them to be effective. A decorative nonfunctioning fireplace can be just as effective around the Christmas holidays as the mantel over a roaring fire.

A Christmas tradition for many years has been hanging Christmas stockings on the mantel. You can take the idea of decorating with Christmas stockings one step further by using more than just one or two stockings. Try a stocking theme where you get one stocking for each of Santa's reindeer or a series of very small stockings for Santa's elves. You can use movie themes as the basis for your stocking decorations, such as one stocking for each of the Disney seven dwarfs or a stocking to represent each of your favourite Christmas movies. Another holiday stocking decorating theme for the fireplace mantel is to put up a stocking for each gift you would like Santa to bring you. For example, one stocking could say "Money" on it while another might say "Wine."

Christmas Tree Forest

A fireplace mantel creates an ideal setting for Christmas miniature displays, and one kind of display you can make is of a Christmas tree forest. Place cotton along the mantel to act as your snowy ground, and populate your forest with miniature Christmas trees. The display is most effective if you use trees of different sizes to give the real look of a forest. Decorate them any way you would like, or buy them predecorated. As an added effect, you can put miniature reindeer and snowmen in your display as well.

Garland Made of Wreaths

Placing decorative garland on your fireplace mantel can be a good way to decorate it for Christmas, but a garland made of small Christmas wreaths would be even more effective. Use wreaths that run from 6 to 12 inches in diameter, and string them together using a strong twine. You can make your own wreaths or buy premade ones. You can arrange them by colour, or use wreaths all the same colour for effect.

Wrapped Gifts

Colourfully wrapped Christmas gifts with large Christmas bows on them placed along your fireplace mantel can create a festive decorating theme. You can use empty boxes just as decoration, or you can place one gift for each family member on the mantel and let that be the last gift opened on Christmas morning.
