Hibiscus tea is a beverage that is made by using the sepals of a roselle flower known as Hibiscus sabdariffa, which originates in the tropics of the Old World. The tea is consumed both cold and hot, and has a tart flavour that is similar to that of a cranberry. It consists of minerals and vitamin C and also has been traditionally used as a mild type of medicine. Many benefits are associated with drinking Hibiscus tea, but there are also some dangers associated with it.

Anti-Inflammatory Drugs and Acetaminophen

Individuals that are taking any anti-inflammatory medications or acetaminophen should be careful with regard to their consumption of hibiscus tea, due to the fact that the tea could affect how the body processes the medications. It is advised that people not take the tea and the anti-inflammatory medication or acetaminophen within two hours of each other to avoid risk of an interaction.

Low Blood Pressure

People who have low blood pressure (also known as hypotension) must avoid drinking Hibiscus tea. Although hibiscus tea is beneficial for those with high blood pressure, people with the opposite ailment should avoid it as it could lower their blood pressure levels even further.

Pregnant and Nursing Females

Pregnant and nursing females are advised strongly against consuming hibiscus tea. This is due to the fact that the effects the hibiscus tea could bring upon both babies and unborn babies are unclear, and could potentially be dangerous.


Hibiscus tea is capable of having negative effects on concentration and focus. People should make sure to not drink this beverage before or during engaging in any activities that require full attention or alertness, such as driving or operating heavy machinery.
