The loss of a loved one is among the most difficult times in a person's life. After the loss, many people look for special ways to honour their loved ones. Flowers, funerals and prayers are all common traditions, but there are several other creative ways in which you can show honour to special people.

Story Circle

Organising a story circle will allow friends and family to verbally express memories of your loved one. Gather together individuals whom were close to the person and bring a video recorder to preserve the event. Allow individuals to share how they knew the person and special memories. Discuss your loved one's favourite things, passions and hobbies. Afterward, duplicate the video to share with friends and family. You can also have the recording transcribed to have a written copy.

Online Memorial

Creating an online memorial will provide a site dedicated specifically to your loved one. There are several free online tributes as well as fee-based tributes. Use the memorial page to post pictures, stories and videos. A guest book will allow mourners to post messages and share stories. Many online memorial sites will allow you to play music, and you can select songs that were favourites of your loved one. Your tribute page can be transferred into a tribute book so that you will have a hard copy available.

Writing

Creative writing is a great way to express the thoughts and feelings that you may be having during the grieving process. Try writing a poem in remembrance or a letter telling how you feel and what you miss about the loved one. You can place these letters and messages in a memory box. Another creative idea is to attach letters and messages to balloons.

Celebration or Dedication

Although the loss of a loved one is a sorrowful time, it can also be a time to celebrate that person's life. Holding a celebration party will allow family and friends to reminisce. The celebration can include the deceased person's favourite foods, music and a dedication board where people can write messages about the person. Another idea is to dedicate a holiday or day of the month to your loved one. Lighting a candle on that day can be a simple tribute to your loved one's memory.
