Go-kart riding requires maturity to make proper decisions regarding speed and safety precautions such as wearing a helmet. Children should never be allowed to operate a go-kart without the supervision of an adult. Many go-karts are made for two people. If you are looking to buy one for your children, consider buying a two-seater so that an adult can steer the kart while the children ride along and learn the importance of safety.

Go Kart Options

There are a wide variety of go-karts on the market that are made for off-road courses. Most of the models that are labelled as dune buggies are off-road vehicles. These models have a roll cage in case of an accident. Most of them also have higher powered engines than those that are made for paved courses. You can also purchase kits that allow you to build your own go kart to your particular specifications. There are even off-road models that are made for children if you are interested in purchasing one for your kids. When looking for off-road karts, look for those that are specifically made for off-roading, as those that are made for paved courses are likely to operate poorly on grass or in dirt courses.

Riding Options

When looking to buy a go-kart, consider your riding options. It is illegal to ride your go kart on streets and highways nationwide. Go-karts are not eligible for license. If you purchase a go-kart you should have your own property to ride the go kart on, or should contact a friend who has a large plot of land for you to use your go kart on. There are also various companies nationwide that offer go-kart courses for rent. Many allow you to bring your own go-kart, or rent your own.

Wear a helmet at all times when operating a go-kart. Check out the track or plot of land before you ride over it. Talk to the owners and even walk the land so that you can view any possible unexpected rough areas. If you are going to fast or turn suddenly in a go-kart and hit a rough patch, you could easily roll your kart.

State Laws

Look into your state laws concerning go karts. Some states have laws in place the prohibit children under a certain age from operating go karts on any piece of land. Go-karts are never allowed on public roads. There are also some specifications, usually maintenance concerned, that are required before a go kart is allowed on public riding tracks. Keep your go-kart maintained to ensure personal safety and to stay in accordance with the law.
