The L-shaped desk is precisely what its name implies -- a desk with one side longer than the other in the shape of the letter L. George Nelson, a furniture designer during the mid 1950s is often credited with creating the first L-shaped desk. Traditional L-shaped desks commonly incorporate dark woods, metal hardware and file drawers. Glass, acrylic and metal are typical materials used in constructing contemporary L-shaped desks. Plentiful workspace, assorted styles and generous storage space make these desks a favourite.

An L-shaped desk allows computer and desk work to be carried out simultaneously without getting out of the desk chair, which saves work time and increases productivity. Depending on the desk size, an L-shaped desk space can often accommodate more than one worker. Employees working together on a project appreciate the configuration of the L-shaped desk. The storage compartments, file drawers, shelves, pull-out keyboard and desk drawers make the L-shaped desk an efficient work station.

Some L-shaped desks offer an optional hutch component. Placed atop one of the L-shaped desk sections, the hutch provides additional organised storage space while allowing full usage of the desk surface area. Closed-door cabinets, pigeon holes, shelves and small storage compartments are common features found in a desk hutch. Many times an attractive wood panel is attached to cover the back of the hutch. Manufactured in assorted styles, colours, hardware and materials, hutches coordinate nicely with similarly styled L-shaped desks.

The modern L-shaped desk is designed for the minimalist. Construction of glass, acrylic, metal or a combination characterises this contemporary desk. The absence of storage space, shelves and compartments ensures the desired clutter-free appearance. Sleek, clean lines mixed with a reflective see-through desk surface enhances the modern decor. A tempered safety-glass top, slide-out keyboard shelf, adjustable CPU mount, black or silver metal legs and stabilising floor levellers enhance the contemporary L-shaped desk.

Commonly constructed of dark woods, such as dark oak or cherry, the traditional L-shaped desk is an attractive and multifunctional furniture piece. Expansive desktops, pencil drawers doubling as pull-out keyboard shelves, spacious file drawers and mounted power strips enhance the productivity of many traditional work stations. Securely locking cabinets and drawers along with pull-out writing boards are additional features offered on some desk styles. Metal hardware, decorative accent mouldings and recessed panel doors enhance the rich traditional design.
