Maytag, a Whirlpool brand, offers consumer appliances, including dishwashers. Maytag sells portable and under-counter dishwashers with features like energy-efficient wash cycles and heated dry settings. If your dishwasher won't start and the lights are off, troubleshoot this problem. You can usually repair common causes of this issue on your own, avoiding expensive service fees.

Home Power

If your Maytag dishwasher doesn't have power, see if you have tripped a circuit breaker, and reset it. If you have a fuse box, check the fuses, and replace any blown fuse. Push the power cord firmly into the outlet. Test the outlet with a lamp, and see if it's working correctly. Use a different outlet if necessary. Completely close the dishwasher door, and remove any object keeping the door open. See if the power cord is frayed. Repair or replace the cord.

A common issue with Maytag dishwashers is that the wires go bad. This shuts off the dishwasher and the lights on the panel. Unplug the power cord from the outlet, and remove the main access panel. Check the wires throughout the dishwasher, especially the wires running to the door switch and the timer. If any wires are loose, tighten the connections. Replace any melted or frayed wires.

Door Switch

The door switch is located within the main housing, near the door frame. This switch lets the dishwasher control panel know that the door is closed. If this part is defective, your Maytag dishwasher won't start, and the lights on the touchpad may not light up. Disconnect the dishwasher from the power source, and examine the door switch. See if any wires are burnt out. If the switch looks fine, test it with a multimeter, and see if it has continuity. If not, get a new one from a Maytag parts dealer.

Control Panel/Board

While not common, your control panel or control board can go out. If your Maytag dishwasher has power, but the lights aren't coming on, check the control panel. Turn off the dishwasher, and turn it back on. See if this resets the control panel. If not, the panel is probably defective. Purchase a new control panel from a Maytag parts dealer since it's hard to repair the control panel. Examine the control board. Unplug the dishwasher, and remove the main access panel. See if the control board has loose or broken connections. Resolder or replace the connections. If the control board still doesn't work, you need a new one.
