In the Sacrament of Confirmation, Catholic teens receive more fully the gift of the Holy Spirit in their lives. The presence of the Spirit deepens their relationship with God and with the Church. This presence also helps them to live out their life of faith more fully and fruitfully. The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are based on a prophecy in the book of Isaiah. Each points out in a particular way God's work in a Catholic's soul.

The gift of wisdom enlightens the spirit to feel God's presence in the everyday events of ordinary life.

The Holy Spirit grants understanding as a guide in a Catholic's daily life and decisions. Confirmed Catholics have access to a greater capacity for understanding through prayer, discernment and the sacraments.

Right judgment

This gift heightens the sense of right and wrong. It also gives young Catholics the strength, through prayer and devotion, to reject what is wrong and choose what is right.

The Holy Spirit endows newly confirmed members of the faith with greater courage to live out their faith in the face of ridicule and hardship.

Reading scripture and studying the life of Jesus Christ can be more fruitful once a Catholic has been given the special gift of knowledge through Confirmation. Study of Scripture and the traditon of the Catholic faith are also more effective under the light of the Holy Spirit.

This gift is also called "piety." It opens the newly confirmed to a greater capacity for respect and trust in God and the Church. Like all gifts of the Holy Spirit, reverence must be fostered, encouraged and practised vigorously to reach its full potential.

Wonder and awe

This gift is also called "fear of the Lord." It opens the eyes of the heart to see God's glory and holiness more fully. Recognising God's power, perfection and goodness, a spiritual person can only respond and with wonder, awe and fear. This gift unites a soul more honestly with the God of creation.
