For boys who are fans of skateboarding, a bedroom theme based around the sport may be an ideal fit. You have many ways to incorporate the theme into the deco so you can create a personalised look for your son that ranges from simple and understated to truly authentic. If you are looking for decorative items that make a strong visual impact on the room, drawing inspiration from the skating park and its industrial feel can create a dramatic look for the space.

Repurposed Skateboards

One way to add visual interest to a skateboard-themed room is to use old skateboards in creative ways. Whole skateboards can be hung on the wall to form a decorative art installation. For a 3D effect, cut the boards in half lengthwise before attaching them to the wall. To create a more functional item, take the wheels off several, and mount them to the wall to serve as shelves for convenient storage. You can also affix a couple to a plain wooden headboard to create a custom look for the bed. In addition, skateboard wheels can be added to the dresser, desk or any other drawers in the room to serve as knobs or draw pulls.

Brick Wall Treatment

To give a bedroom the industrial feel of a skating park, opt for a brick wall treatment. You can use a faux finish technique with paint to mimic the look of brick on one of the walls, or use brick stencils to create a similar effect. If you prefer to avoid painting, brick wallpaper is an ideal alternative and can easily transform a plain wall. Covering all four walls in a bedroom may overwhelm the space, particularly if it is small, so cover one wall with a brick treatment and use it as the room's focal point.

Graffiti Style Mural

A graffiti-style mural can be an interesting complement to a brick wall treatment. You can purchase a premade mural that usually includes a brick background with colourful graffiti on top of it. However, you can also create your own mural by using neon paint pens to mark your brick wall treatment with personalised graffiti. If the bedroom does not contain a faux brick wall, you may also take a large white sheet and allow your son to spray paint various designs on it so it can be hung on one of the walls for decoration.

Skater Wall Clings

While skateboarding posters are an ideal wall decoration for a boy's bedroom, wall clings in the shape of skateboarders can add a more authentic element. You can find wall clings that depict well known skaters so your son can hang an outline of his favourite skater. Generic black silhouette figures are also available as wall clings and often portray skating tricks that your son may enjoy. In addition to skater wall clings and posters, tin street signs can add an air of authenticity to the room's walls as well.
