A cable tie, also known as a zip tie, is used to fasten or bind things together. Cable ties are popularly used to neatly bundle cables and wires. The Thomas & Betts Corp. ( created cable ties in 1958, when they were trying to bundle together hundreds of wires used in manufacturing aircraft. Today, cable ties are available in several different styles, colours and sizes. Crafters can use the handy tools to create several projects.

Personalised Plates

Make a personalised name plate for children's bicycles. Cut out a 9-inch oval using craft foam. Allow children to create their name plate with foam letters and embellishments. Punch out two holes on each side of the plate for the plastic cable ties to fit through, and tie the plate onto the front handlebars of your children's bicycles.

Illuminated Stars

Use bamboo sticks that are all the same length to make a five-pointed star. Use cable ties to fasten the sticks together at all adjoining points. Cut the excess tails on the ties. Take a string of white Christmas lights and string the lights throughout the entire star, using the zip ties to keep the lights in place. Plug in the star and enjoy the illumination. You can make several stars to cover a large interior or exterior wall.

Decorated Birdhouse

Clean out a milk carton, and cut a 2-inch hole in one side. Decorate the carton and glue a 6-inch bamboo stick just underneath the cut-out hole. Cut a small hole in the top of the carton to fit a zip tie through the carton, so that you can hang the birdhouse.

Pen and Pencil Holder

Collect five 3.5-inch floppy disks to make a pen or pencil holder. Drill holes into the corners of the disks in order to fit cable ties through. Line the four floppy disks in a row, side by side, with all metal sliders facing the same way. Use cable ties to connect all four disks, then fold them to form the sides of a cube. Connect the last two sides. Set the cube down so that the metal sliders are facing up, and add the fifth disk to the top of the square with cable ties. Trim the tails, flip over the cube, and fill your holder with pens and pencils.
