Good gifts for 16-year-old girls

Updated April 17, 2017

Turning 16 is a rite of passage for many young adults, as it marks being legally able to drive. Many people mark this birthday with a Sweet 16 party, especially for girls. While there is a stereotype of teenage girls being picky, it's quite simple to come up with an idea for a gift for a 16-year-old girl.

A piece of jewellery can be something the young girl keeps for the rest of her life. When she opens her jewellery box and sees the jewellery, she will remember who gave it to her and why. Ask someone who knows the gift recipient what jewellery she wears often. You will not want to buy a bracelet for someone who prefers earrings, and vice versa. Try to choose timeless pieces that will always be in fashion. Stud earrings featuring pearls or diamonds are an appropriate choice, as is a strand of pearls. If you purchase a bracelet or watch, consider engraving a special message or the date on the piece.

A journal can provide a private place for the gift recipient's thoughts and feelings about a particular event in her life. She can write in it only when something big happens in her life, or she can record her day-to-day feelings. Not only is journaling a way to express emotions in the heat of the moment, but the gift recipient will enjoy looking back and reading her entries once she is older and perhaps has a family of her own.

Purchasing a car for someone is an extravagant gift, and not something to be taken lightly. Often, a parent will make this purchase. After all, a 16-year-old is at the legal driving age, and many teenagers are more than ready to get behind the wheel. When purchasing a vehicle, consider safety standards above all else. Keep in mind that the vehicle also will need to be registered and properly insured before it can be driven. Speak to the gift recipient about how they will earn money for gasoline, insurance and any car maintenance.

A 16-year-old girl is rapidly making the transition into womanhood, and she will need a wardrobe to take with her to college and beyond. Consider speaking with the gift recipient of the importance of a well-stocked wardrobe. Advise that designer or name-brand clothes are not necessary, but well-made outfits in basic colours with a few trendy accessories will create a timeless wardrobe of clothing that can be worn for a long time. Invite the gift recipient to her favourite clothing store for a shopping spree, or purchase a gift card.

Spa Day

Give the gift of relaxation and beauty with a gift token to an area spa. The gift recipient can choose from a variety of treatments--typical salon treatments include manicures, pedicures, massages and facials. An acne-prone teenager would appreciate a facial, while an athlete could benefit from a deep-tissue massage. If you are close to the gift recipient and have the finances, consider making it a special day or half-day, with the two of you enjoying these treatments together.
