Graphics cards, sometimes referred to as video cards, are essential to most computers and allow them to carry out different functions. These functions range from online video playback to complex 3D animation. Graphics cards are present in most computers and can be swapped out with a unit that better suits the needs of the user. The ATI Radeon HD 3100 is designed specifically with gaming in mind and is HD friendly.

The ATI Radeon HD 3100 features a PCI-E interface. The PCI-E interface allows the graphics card to communicate with the motherboard at a high bandwidth rate. This high-speed data transfer allows the motherboard to process high amounts of information without lag. This is one of the fastest interfaces utilised by graphics cards as PCI-E is approximately 118% faster than standard PCI. The ATI Radeon HD 3100 is designed to be powered by the motherboard's main power supply.

The ATI Radeon HD 3100 operates at a core speed of 350MHz and a shader speed of 350MHz as well. The speed of these processors is measured in Megahertz which represents one million cycles per second. These speeds allow the graphics card to process information internally and send other information to the motherboard to be processed simultaneously.

The memory on the ATI Radeon HD 3100 varies depending on the amount of memory the computer has. For example, if a computer with the ATI graphics card installed has 256 MB of RAM available, the card will utilise this memory as well. The ATI Radeon HD 3100 is limited to a maximum of 512 MB of memory. Due to this relatively low amount of memory, it is recommended that all other applications be closed before beginning a graphics heavy process.

Video Playback

The ATI Radeon HD 3100 features HDCP support, ATI Avivo HD and Hybrid Graphics Technology to provide smooth video playback. ATI Avivo works together with the Hybrid graphics to increase the speed in which the graphics card processes tasks. This allows a user to increase the overall screen resolution while avoiding drawbacks such as lag.
