According to Cookie Lee's book "Wedding Anniversaries: From Paper to Diamonds," although the tradition of marking significant anniversaries with gemstones, flowers and specific gifts dates to medieval Germany, it wasn't until 1937 when the National Retail Jewelers Association designated every year with its own attributes. The 45th wedding anniversary is sapphire.

Colours

Although sapphires can be found in every colour but red, they are most commonly blue, with shades varying from almost purple to almost green. Choose a shade of blue and combine it with another colour, such as turquoise, or with white or silver. Alternatively, you can have a more monochromatic theme with varying shades of blue.

Catering

You can elegantly incorporate the sapphire theme into food and beverages served during the anniversary celebration. Wedding planner Lisa Light suggests creating a signature drink for the 45th anniversary celebration, perhaps using Bombay Sapphire and Curacao liquor. An anniversary cake could be decorated with blue flowers or sapphires made of frosting. Alternatively, consider serving the same foods the bride and groom enjoyed at their wedding reception. You may be able to find a photo of their wedding cake and have it replicated for the anniversary celebration.

Gifts

With a theme like sapphire, it is easy to come up with appropriate gifts. Give jewellery such as a pair of sapphire earrings, a sapphire pendant or sapphire cufflinks. If you create a memory book for the couple, search for headlines from 45 years ago. You can find old copies of newspapers at your local public library and print out the front page from the day they were married.

Decor and favours

Light suggests incorporating the sapphire theme within the decor. You can use cobalt blue glasses on the tables and blue linens. Use candles and votive colours in the blues you have chosen. Decorate the room with blue and white fairy-lights and flowers in varying shades of blue. For favours, make CDs featuring the music of 45 years ago that the couple loved.
