Costumed characters are like big, bouncy toys for young children --- they make a birthday party all that much more fun. Rent a costume from a local costume supply store or hire someone to come out to your party in costume to make your child's birthday party one that he and his friends will remember for years to come. Just make sure to ask for references and background checks on anyone that you plan to hire to bring to your party, to ensure they're not a danger to your child and his friends.

Hire a comedian, face painter or juggler who is skilled and experienced in entertaining children for your child's birthday party. Select someone who will come costumed as a court jester or magician. These characters can entertain your child and his birthday guests with balloon animals, funny tricks like pulling a colourful handkerchief out of their sleeves and providing fun activities like sing-a-longs and face painting. A character of this sort can provide a circus-like atmosphere that's fun for all of the children attending.
Invite your child's favourite superhero to his party. In addition to choosing that superhero as the theme for the party with paper dishes and tablecloths as well as a cake showing pictures of that character, invite him (or her) to the party. If you have a relative or friend who is very good with children, loves to entertain others and doesn't mind dressing up, you can rent a Spiderman, Superman, Wonder Woman or Green Flash costume. Or, you can hire someone to show up at the party in costume. If you can afford it, you may want to consider hiring multiple characters such as Batman and Robin.
Young children may enjoy having Big Bird, Elmo, Cookie Monster or Oscar the Grouch at their parties. As with the superheroes described above, you can hire someone, or multiple characters, to show up at the party for an hour or two, or you can have a friend or relative dress up as your child's favourite Sesame Street character.
Disney and Nickelodeon
An appearance from a "real" Disney princess like Ariel or Cinderella or Nickelodeon's Dora the Explorer can make a child's birthday party. Hire Shrek, SpongeBob SquarePants, Diego and Boots, the Wonder Pets, Beauty and the Beast or Pooh, Tiger, Piglet and Eyeore to hang out at your kid's birthday party for a few hours. With the popular Pirates of the Caribbean movies, your child may also enjoy a visit from a costumed Jack Sparrow to entertain guests at his party.
