Applique comes from the French word for "apply." Embroidered iron-on appliques offer a quick and simple way to embellish kids' clothing. Appliques can be bought ready-made from stores, or they can be handmade. The entire design can be made using embroidery stitches; or a combination of coloured fabric and embroidery can make up the motif.

Instant Embroidered Applique

Ready-made iron-on fabric appliques are pretreated on the reverse side with a fusible adhesive. Application is a matter of positioning the applique on clothing, then ironing it in place. The heat of the iron melts the fusible glue, sticking the applique permanently to the clothing.

Fusible Webbing

Embroidered motifs that do not come pre-glued can be stuck in place using fusible webbing. A piece of webbing the same size and shape as the embroidered motif should be cut out and placed between the applique and the surface to be embellished. Iron the applique into place.

Making Appliques

Appliques can be hand or machine embroidered, then cut out and ironed into place with fusible webbing. Printable fabric with fusible adhesive backing is available for use in inkjet printers; the printed applique can be decorated with embroidered details before or after being ironed into place.
