If you're hosting a western- or nautical-themed birthday party for a family member or friend, give the cake a decorative rope-style border. A rope border will complement a western-inspired cake featuring horseshoe, cowboy or horse designs. It will also work on a cake decked out with ship or sailboat patterns. To create the eye-catching border, simply use a pastry bag filled with decadent frosting and equipped with the appropriate tip.

Instructions

  1. 1

Place a star #18 tip on a pastry bag.

  2. 2

Fill the pastry bag halfway with buttercream icing using a spatula. Twist the top of the bag to force the icing down toward the tip and to remove any air pockets.

  3. 3

Grip the twisted portion of the bag with one hand; you'll guide the tip with your opposite hand while decorating. Hold the pastry bag at a 45-degree angle from the cake.

  4. 4

Begin piping a rope border around the cake by making a "S" shape. Make another "S" shape, starting at the bottom arch of the previous shape.

  5. 5

Continue connecting the "S" shapes until the rope border is complete.
