How to Look Up Your AIM Chat History

Updated March 20, 2017

AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) allows you to chat with your friends and family through video chat, instant messages and voice chat. Using AIM, you can talk to your AIM buddies in real time regardless of their location. When you open AIM and begin chatting with your friends, the program keeps track of your chat history and saves the information to your computer. When your chat includes important data, such as a phone number or address, viewing your AIM chat history is essential. To look up your AIM chat history, you must access the program's archive file.

Open AIM and log in to your account.

Click "Options" button from the top of the instant messenger and select "Settings" from the drop-down list that appears.

Click the "IM Archives" tab from the left side of the "Settings" dialogue box.

Click "View Archives," and the instant message log window opens on your screen.

Double-click an AIM username to view the chat history.
