Walkers can be much more than a functional tool for helping the injured or disabled get around with ease. Decorate your walker, or the walker of a loved one, and transform it into a stylish, functional and personalised walking aid. Walkers can be decorated temporarily in accordance with upcoming holidays or in more permanent fashions that mirror the spirit and personality of the owner. Use affordable materials you may already have around the home to convert your everyday walker into a one-of-a-kind medical device.

Instructions

  1. 1

Wrap brightly coloured ribbon or coloured tape around the legs of the walker. Use two or more colours and create striped patterns. Many scrapbooking stores have countless varieties of patterned tape available that can easily be used to give your walker some much-needed style.

  2. 2

Wrap wire garland around the handles or legs of the walker. Wire garland is a good choice for celebrating upcoming holidays, as seasonal styles are often available at craft and fabric stores.

  3. 3

Use stickers to decorate and add unique elements to the walker's design. Stickers are the easiest way to give your walker character.

  4. 4

Fasten a bicycle horn or bell on the front of the walker. Use the horn to let others know when you're coming through or just to get their attention and offer a friendly greeting.

  5. 5

Strap a bumbag onto the front of the walker. Use wire or tape to secure the bumbag in place tightly. Bumbags not only add a decorative element to the walker, but also provide convenient pockets for storage of personal belongings.

  6. 6

Use a glossy spray paint to decorate the walker in a more permanent fashion. Tape off areas of the walker that you don't wish to paint with masking tape prior to painting. Use light coats of spray paint in order to avoid dripping. Allow the paint to dry completely between coats.

  7. 7

Wrap a strand of battery powered lights around the walker. Battery powered lights come in a variety of shapes and colours and are one way to draw attention to your unique and fashionable walker design.

  8. 8

Use cardboard to make a sign and attach it to the front of the walker with wire or tape. Cardboard signs are an excellent way to let others know if you've got something to say. Funny signs are sure to bring a smile to other's faces as well as the walker's user.

Tips and warnings

  • Take care that none of your decorations inhibit the use of the walker. The user should be able to move their feet freely without the risk of getting snagged on decorations.
