In many instances, an image's background can be more important than the objects or people in its foreground. A bland background simply doesn't grab the attention of viewers, and can even cause your audience to all but disregard your photos. But with the help of Paint.NET, a free image editor, you can pep up your image's background and transform it with cool effects.

    Colour Change, Desaturate and Gray Scale Effects

    Launch Paint.NET. Click on the Paint.NET's "Open" button to import an image into the program.

    Click on the "Lasso Select" tool in Paint.NET's "Tools" window. Hold down your mouse's left button, while tracing the perimeter of the foreground object in your image. Select the "Invert Selection" option from the "Edit" heading to select the image's background.

    Select the "Hue/Saturation" option from Paint.NET's "Adjustments" heading. Drag the Hue/Saturation menu's "Hue" slider to the left or right to change the colour or your image's background.

    Drag the "Saturation" slider toward the left to desaturate your image. Drag the "Saturation" slider completely to the left to turn your background to a grey scale.

    Click "OK" to apply your changes to your background. Click on Paint.NET's "Save" button to save your image.

    Gaussian Blur

    Start Paint.NET, and then click on the program's "Open" button to import an image. Click on the "Lasso Select" tool in Paint.NET's "Tools" window, and then select your foreground object. Trace the outline of the foreground object while holding down your mouse's left button.

    Click on the "Edit" heading, and then select its "Invert Selection" option to select your image's background.

    Click on the "Effects" heading. Highlight the "Blurs" heading in the Effects menu, and then click on the "Gaussian Blur" option.

    Drag the "Gaussian Blur" menu's "Radius" slider to the right to apply blur to your image's background. The farther right you move the slider, the greater the intensity of the blur. Click "OK."

    Click on Paint.NET's "Save" button to store your changes to your image.
