A cowl is a type of head covering originally worn during the medieval time period. This type of garment consists of a long hood with a face opening. The edges of the hood rest on the wearer's shoulders. Many superhero masks are related to the original design from medieval times, but they are differentiated by a form-fitted head piece with an open neckline for easy removal.

Place a cotton beanie on top of your head. Make sure that the beanie completely covers your hair and ears. Tuck any stray hairs under the beanie to prevent the hair from being ripped out in the later stages of construction.
Cut approximately 20 pieces of duct tape that are 6 inches long with a pair of scissors. Place one end of each piece of tape along a flat surface in preparation for their use.
Place one strip of duct tape at a time on the beanie until it is completely covered. Cut more pieces of tape if necessary.
Measure the distance from the left side of the beanie across your eye area to the right side of the beanie. This will be your mask width. Measure the distance from the top of the beanie to the bottom of your cheek bone. This will be the length of your mask.
Measure, mark and cut a piece of cardboard that is your mask width and length.
Hold the piece of cardboard against your face so that the top of the cardboard is touching the top of the beanie. Locate the top of your nose and the left and right side of your nose. Mark each point with a permanent marker. Locate the top, bottom and both sides of your eyes. Mark each point with a permanent marker.
Remove the mask from your face and cut a triangle out of the mask using the three marked nose points. Cut ovals out of the mask using the four eye points.
Center a small piece of cardboard over your nose.
Cut two triangles from a piece of cardboard that are 4 inches high and 3 inches wide. Position the triangles on the left and right side of the beanie approximately 3 inches above the tip of your ear. The 3 inch side should be horizontal to the floor. Attach the triangles to the beanie with duct tape.
Remove the beanie from your head. The duct tape will hold the beanie in a semi-rigid position.
Position the cardboard mask so that the sides and top of the mask connect with the corresponding parts of the beanie. Place small strips of duct tape along the top and sides of the mask to hold the mask in place.
Position the nose piece in the nose cutout of the mask. Place small strips of duct tape along both sides of the nose piece to hold the nose into place.
Slide the mask over a dummy head. Place small strips of duct tape on the mask until all of the beanie and cardboard is covered. Make sure that you also put strips of duct tape over the edges.
Paint the entire surface and edges of the beanie and mask with liquid latex paint. Allow the paint to dry and reapply until the desired thickness is achieved.
Remove the finished cowl from the dummy head.
