How to Disable the Reverse Safety Switch on a Cub Cadet 3185

Updated April 17, 2017

The 3185 is a riding lawnmower manufactured by Cub Cadet. The Cub Cadet 3185 comes with a number of built-in safety features, including the reverse safety switch. This prevents the user from being able to engage the cutting blades while moving in reverse. This is a great safety feature for those with small children or pets. However, if you have neither and want to mow while moving in reverse, this safety feature can be disabled.

Locate the two engine compartment cover latches, both located on the left side of the cover. One is at the top, the other at the bottom. Flip the latches into the "Up" position and open the bonnet cover.

Use the socket set to remove the 3185's negative battery cable. Pull the cable aside once it has been removed from the battery post.

Locate the neutral safety switch, mounted on the left side of the shifter gear. It's a black plastic plug with three blue wires running from it that's plugged into a small white plastic wiring harness. Pinch down on the tabs on the black plug and pull it free from the white plastic wiring harness.

Replace the 3185's negative battery cable with the socket set. Close and latch the engine cover.
