A nautical theme is a good option as home decor for someone who enjoys vacationing at the beach, sailing or spending time near the ocean. Nautical home decor is also a good idea for a beach house. If you want to decorate your home with a nautical theme, consider making some of the items yourself. With a little creativity and some supplies from your local craft store, you can create all sorts of things that will complement your nautical theme.

  1. 1

Make a nautical themed mirror frame. Choose a framed mirror with a flat frame, rather than a bevelled frame so that when you apply the rope it will stick. Place a bead of hot glue along the mirror's frame. Place a piece of rope along the bead of hot glue and press it into place until the glue dries. Continue gluing the rope to the mirror frame, going around it again and again until the entire frame is covered in rope.

  2. 2

Find a piece of driftwood on a beach or purchase one from a local craft store. Brush any sand or debris away from the piece of driftwood. Fit a drill with a forstner bit. Press the drill bit into the driftwood at one end and drill a hole that is about an inch deep. Do not go all the way through the driftwood. Continue doing this until you reach the other end of the piece of driftwood. Place votive candles inside the holes in the driftwood to make a nautical themed candle holder.

  3. 3

Cut a basic anchor shape out of a piece of plywood using a jigsaw. Prime the anchor and then paint it whatever colour would coordinate best with your room. Use a piece of fine-grained sandpaper to distress the anchor around the edges a bit so that it does not look brand new. Hang the anchor on the wall in your nautical-themed room.

  4. 4

Create a nautical wreath for your front door using a plain grapevine wreath. Hot glue a variety of different sea shells to the wreath. Choose sea shells in different shapes and colours to give the wreath some dimension. Add starfish to the wreath as well. Hook a wreath hanger onto the top of the wreath and place it on the door.

  5. 5

Make pillows that will give the furniture in your space a nautical feel. Purchase fabric with bold stripes. Consider red or blue stripes on white for a traditional nautical look. Cut the fabric to the size of your throw pillows and use a sewing machine to create the pillowcases. Put them on the pillows and place the throw pillows onto your sofas and chairs.
