Neck rings are raised bands that encircle the base of a doll neck. The ring is designed to be installed once and to hold the doll's head in place once it is installed. This means the neck ring isn't designed for the head to be pulled off. Each time a doll head is pulled off, the neck ring is likely to become damaged, torn or ripped completely off. Once the neck ring is no longer attached to the doll neck, the doll head will not stay on. Attaching, repairing or replacing a neck ring is common to doll repair.

    Premolded Neck Ring Attachment

  1. 1

Remove the doll clothing and anything on the head, such as jewellery and hats. Wash the head and torso with soap and water to remove dirt. Rinse with clear water and dry with a towel. When possible, locate the missing neck ring and clean it.

  2. 2

Fit the neck ring to the neck. If the neck ring is torn but still partially intact, or if it fits well in alignment, then glue along the tear on both sides of the neck and press the ring back into position. If the ring is harvested from another doll, use an artist's knife to cut along the ring and along the neck to match the pieces together, then glue. Allow the glue to dry.

  3. 3

Cut a strip of cheesecloth or other similar loose, net fabric. Paint the inside of the neck with glue. Press the cheesecloth into the glue so that the cloth conforms to the shape of the neck. Once the cloth is tight to the inside neck material, paint over the cheesecloth with another coat of glue. This will create a continuous fabric piece across the damaged area and make the repair stronger.

    Reborn Baby Neck Rings

  1. 1

Measure the diameter of your reborn baby neck. Measure from one outside edge across the centre to the other outside edge. Use this measurement when you order the neck ring flange. The flange may be sold in millimetre sizes, so use a conversion table to determine the correct size.

  2. 2

Place the neck ring on the vinyl neck. Attach the smaller end first. Slip the ring into the groove.

  3. 3

Warm the vinyl neck with a hair dryer if the ring is difficult to install. By warming the neck, it will become more pliable and allow you to insert the ring more easily. The neck should tighten as it cools.

Tips and warnings

  • If the head has come off of a doll, always examine the neck ring as the most likely source of the failure.
