When you have a cough, one of the best solutions for getting sleep at night is to sleep on your side. Science shows that when you sleep on your side your body is able to take in more oxygen even though you are breathing less. Sleeping on your side not only helps with coughs, it also helps with sleep paralysis, sleep apnoea and asthma. There are many simple things that you can do to make sure that you stay on your side at night while sleeping.
Wait until you are really sleepy before going to bed and lay on your left side. This will help you to fall asleep quicker and lessen coughing.
Breathe only through your nose before going to sleep and during sleep.
Relax all of your muscles and use props to keep yourself on your side. Props can consist of anything from extra pillows, a backpack worn throughout the night or a belt looped around your chest with knotted socks at your back.
