How to Speed Up Nail Growth

Having long nails is important to to some people's overall appearance. Others suffer from short, brittle nails that may look visibly unattractive or cause other problems. If you wish to have longer, stronger nails, yet continue to struggle with ways to promote nail growth, several proven methods can be tried. Make simple adaptations to your everyday beauty regimen to achieve longer, stronger nails over time.

    Give yourself manicures at least once every two weeks, by conducting an at-home manicure or visiting a professional nail salon. Prior to performing the manicure, soak nails in warm, soapy water, which prepares your cuticles to be pushed back during the manicure. Add a cuticle treatment or oil after the manicure to keep your nails strong and healthy.

    File your nails regularly. When doing this, shape your nails starting on the outside edge, and work towards the middle of the nail to prevent damage. When filing, move the emory board only in one direction to avoid weakening your nail tip, as this makes nails prone to cracking and breaking.

    Perform daily finger exercises to increase blood flow to your fingers, which promotes healthy growth. Exercises can be as simple as extending and flexing your fingers multiple times in a row or performing activities such as typing or playing the piano.

    Condition nails by applying a nutrient- or vitamin-rich hand cream to your nails and letting the lotion sit on your nails for at least 20 minutes. Do this a few times a week, or nightly for more severe cases.

    Keep your nails painted. This helps prevent cracking and breaking and keeps a protective layer on your nails. Apply a layer of nutrient-filled nail polish weekly, or each night before bed for quicker results.

    Change your diet to accommodate strong nail growth. Incorporate extra protein into your diet to keep your nails strong and healthy. Drink protein shakes or eat more lean meat; take vitamin D supplements. Include Biotin or vitamin B supplements into your diet to promote nail growth.

Tips and warnings

  • Avoid playing with your nails too much, as picking, biting and over-filing can weaken your nails and cause other problems.
