How to Make Glitter in Photoshop CS3

Adding a glitter effect to an image in Photoshop can be a tasteful way to incorporate elements of design with the lighthearted fun of arts and crafts. Photoshop has no native glitter tool, but you can use glitter textures from the Internet to add glitter to your images. Creating an effective glitter effect will require some practice with using the select tool, but using this effect will create an image that will add a playful element to your image.

  • Photoshop CS3 or better

    Open your image in Photoshop.

    Use the magic wand to select the part of your image that you want to add glitter to, then hold "Control" and press "C" on your keyboard to copy the image.

    Hold "Control" and press "N" on your keyboard to create a new image. Name your new file in the window that pops up and click "OK." Press "Control" and "V" on your keyboard to paste the image that you selected in step 2.

    Right-click "Background" in the layers menu at the bottom-right of your screen and select "Delete Layer."

    Hold "Control" and press "O" on your keyboard to open your glitter texture. Navigate to where your glitter texture is on your computer and press "OK." Click the rectangular select tool on the right-side of your screen, then select a large part of your glitter texture. Hold "Control" press "C" to copy what you selected, then click the minimise button at the top-right corner of the window containing your glitter texture.

    Re-open the image you created in step 3, hold "Control" and press "V" to paste your glitter texture onto your image. The glitter texture will be pasted onto a new layer in your image. Hide your glitter texture by pressing the eyeball button next to the glitter layer.

    Select the portion of the image you want to apply your glitter texture to. Select the layer with the glitter texture, then hold "Control" and "Shift" while pressing "I" on your keyboard to inverse the selection. Press the "Delete" key on your keyboard.

Tips and warnings

  • Some stock photography websites, such as stock.xchange, allow you to download glitter textures free of charge.
  • Make sure you have permission to use any glitter effect you find on the Internet.
