The HP Pavilion dv9700 Entertainment Notebook computer features a 17-inch WXGA+ high-definition BrightView widescreen display with a maximum possible resolution of 1440-by-900 pixels. The computer also includes a 15-pin D-sub VGA connector, which allows you to easily connect the dv9700 to an external monitor. Doing so allows you to either view the computer's main display on a larger screen or to use the external monitor to expand the desktop area.

Things you need
- 15-pin D-sub (VGA) cable
Turn the computer and monitor off. Plug one end of the VGA cable into the VGA port on the left side of the computer, near the rear edge. Plug the other end of the cable into the VGA connector on the monitor. If your monitor happens to have only a digital video interface (DVI) connector, you need a VGA-to-DVI adaptor, which you can find online or in most computer stores.
Turn on the computer and the monitor.
Right-click an empty area on the computer's desktop and select "Personalize."
Click "Display Settings." The computer should recognise the newly connected monitor. Once this occurs, your monitor is ready to use as a mirror of your laptop monitor. To switch back and forth between the external monitor and the laptop screen, press "FN" and "F4" at the same time.
Configure the extended desktop by selecting which screen you want to use as the extension and clicking the Extend the Desktop onto This Monitor box. You can now arrange what area you want the extended monitor to cover by clicking the monitor's icon and dragging it to the desired location to the left, right, top or bottom of the primary monitor. Click "OK" to save the changes.
