Correcting out-of-sync MP4 video files requires the use of a third-party video editor. Windows Movie Maker cannot achieve this task, as MP4 files are not supported. The audio can go out of sync for a number of reasons; it most commonly occurs when encoding or transferring the video to the computer. Correcting the sync is done the same way in almost all software programs and is considered a fairly simple task for most video editors.

  1. 1

Download and install a video editing program. Adobe Premiere Pro is recommended, but Adobe After Effects, Sony Vegas and Apple Final Cut also work. All of the programs are available for trial download.

  2. 2

Open Adobe Premiere Pro and create a new project file.

  3. 3

Import the MP4 video into the project. This can be done by dragging the video file into the "Media Bin" of the program.

  4. 4

Drag the MP4 file from the media bin into the "Timeline" of the project. The audio and video tracks of the MP4 file will be displayed in the "Timeline."

  5. 5

Right click on the audio track and click "Unlink." This will unlink the audio track from the video track, enabling it to be moved forward and backwards.

  6. 6

Play the video and examine the audio and video sync. Is the audio ahead or behind the video? Try to estimate how much the sync is off by.

  7. 7

Click and hold on the audio track of the video and drag it forward or backwards depending on whether the audio lags or is ahead.

  8. 8

Test the change. Play the video and see if the movement of the audio track made things better or worse.

  9. 9

Keep adjusting and testing the position of the audio track until the sync is corrected. This can take a bit of patience and skill but will eventually fix the video.

  10. 10

Save the project file by clicking the "CTRL" and "S" keys at the same time on the keyboard.

  11. 11

Export the newly edited video by clicking "File" and then clicking "Export." Select the export settings and render the video.
