How to Get Rid of House Flies Naturally

Updated February 21, 2017

House flies -- all buzzing and germs -- are a real pain. Unfortunately, during warm weather, it can be hard to keep them out of your house. They crawl in through open windows, holes in screens and any other space they can get through. Get rid of house flies without resorting to sticky tape or chemicals. Stay away from less natural treatments to avoid harming children and house pets. Once you're rid of the flies, your house will feel more like home again.

Plant basil in window boxes by your kitchen windows. Flies are often lured into the kitchen by the promise of food and trash, but they're repelled by basil. Not only will you have a delicious herb for the hob, you'll have less flies around, too.

Mix lemon grass aromatherapy oil in a spray bottle with water. Use five drops of oil for every cup of water. Spray the mixture on windowsills and doorways. It smells good and repels flies.

Place an essential oil burner in rooms where you have problems with flies. Put in eucalyptus, clove or lavender oil and keep it burning. The scent repels flies.

Plant a garden full of tansy near entrances to your home. The beautiful colour and shape of the flower will dazzle the eye while acting as a covert fly stopper.

Put up screens over opened windows and caulk any holes that appear around doors or windows.
