Create decorative home decor items and customised jewellery using epoxy or polyester resin. Polyester resin is more toxic than epoxy but less expensive, as it is sold in larger quantities. You can also cast deeper embeds with one pass of polyester resin. Epoxy resin has a shallow setting depth; some epoxy resins must be applied in 1/8-inch layers. No matter which resin you select, carefully follow the manufacturer's safety, mixing, application and dry time recommendations.

    Deep Resin Casting

  1. 1

Arrange your work station with a flexible mould and the embed(s) that you would like to cast inside the resin.

  2. 2

Put on a ventilation mask and mix polyester resin according to the manufacturer's guidelines. Polyester resin hardens with the addition of a few drops of a hardening catalyst. Mix polyester resin in a well-ventilated area.

  3. 3

Pour the mixed resin into the flexible mould up to the point for the embed(s). Fill the mould half full of the mixed resin to embed flat objects or slightly raised objects. To embed three-dimensional objects with greater depth, only fill the mould 1/4 to 1/3 full.

  4. 4

Place the embedded object(s) on top of the resin. Pour mixed resin over the embed(s) to fill the mould. Allow the resin to dry according to the manufacturer's directions.

  5. 5

Pop the resin casting out of the flexible mould.

    Resin Casting Jewelry

  1. 1

Tape the back side of an open metal jewellery frame to enclose the frame on three sides. Spray both sides of a pressed flower with floral glaze to prepare it for embedding in resin. Allow the glaze to dry completely. The glaze prevents the colours from reacting to the resin and spreading.

  2. 2

Wear a safety mask to avoid inhaling the resin. Mix epoxy resin in a squirt bottle. Follow the manufacturer's directions for mixing the resin.

  3. 3

Squirt a thin layer of resin inside the jewellery frame, on top of the tape. Epoxy resin is self-levelling. Center the pressed flower on top of the resin. Cover the flower with more epoxy resin, to the rim of the frame.

  4. 4

Wait up to 24 hours before removing the tape from the backside of the jewellery frame.
