Recycle your little girl's jeans by making them into cut-off shorts and adding tulle to transform them into an adorable tutu on jean shorts. Making the jeans into shorts will prevent the need for purchasing tights or leggings, while the ruffled, tulle tutu skirt will delight any little girl's imagination. These ballerina shorts are not just for playtime. They can be worn as an everyday favourite outfit. Using basic straight stitches, the tutu shorts can be completed in less than an hour.

Things you need

  • Jeans, your child's size
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • 2/3 yard tulle, 54-inch wide
  • Straight pins
  • Tailor's chalk

  1. 1

Measure down 5 inches from the bottom of the zipper on a pair of little girl's blue jeans. Cut off the legs at this measurement to make shorts. Sew a zigzag stitch over the cut edges of the legs. A hem is not necessary.

  2. 2

Cut two strips 12 inches wide along the 54-inch width of the tulle.

  3. 3

Fold one strip in half, matching the long edges. Pin the edge along the fold. Repeat with the other strip.

  4. 4

Set your sewing machine's straight stitch setting at the longest length. Sew along the pin folded edges a 1/4 inch from the fold. Leave thread tails at least 5 inches long on each end of the strips.

  5. 5

Separate the threads on one end of a strip and tie them into a knot. Separate the threads on the opposite end. Pull each of the threads to test which one will gather the stitches. Pull the gathering thread to ruffle the stitched edge of the tulle. Gather the edge until it measures the distance around the hips of the jeans. Tie the threads on the gathering end together. Trim the threads. Gather the remaining strip in the same way.

  6. 6

Mark the sewing line for the tutu ruffle below the bottom of the zipper. Starting and stopping at the bottom of the zipper, draw a horizontal line around the jean shorts using tailor's chalk.

  7. 7

Pin the folded edge of one gathered strip over the chalk line. Start and end the strip at the center back of the shorts. Using your regular stitch length, sew the tutu ruffle to the shorts. Pin the remaining ruffle over the attached ruffle. Sew the ruffle to the shorts.
