Electrostatic painting systems use a high-voltage electrical charge to atomise paint particles which attracts the paint to metal objects, making application quick and simple. Electrostatic painting is commonly used to paint large metal objects such as metal fences and aeroplanes. This method of painting is best used in open or well-ventilated environments, as the spray gun produces chemicals that are dangerous if inhaled. Proper safety gear is also required to prevent injury.

Prepare the space for painting. Guarantee that there is proper ventilation in the area. Cover the ground and objects that you are not painting with dust sheets. Place the electrostatic painting system's grounding wire in the ground to prevent electric shock.
Clean the surface of the object you are painting with a hose or rags to remove dirt and dust particles which will prevent the paint from sticking.
Put on all of your safety gear. Be sure to protect all exposed skin from contact with the paint. Leave the hand that will be holding the paint gun exposed in order to prevent electric shock.
Load the paint or primer into the electrostatic painting machine's paint chamber, then seal the paint chamber. Turn on the electrostatic paint machine and allow a few moments for the paint to ionise.
Hold the spray nozzle a few inches from the metal surface you are painting, then pull the trigger to begin the painting process. Slowly move the nozzle back and forth at a vertical angle of no more than three feet over the surface of the object. If you are painting a three-dimensional surface, the ionised paint will wrap around all the metal edges of the surface as you paint.
Let the paint dry for 24 hours. Repeat Steps 3 through 5 for additional coats.
