Care & Maintenance of Crittall Metal Windows

Updated February 21, 2017

Crittall Windows Ltd. is a company that originated in the United Kingdom with its first metal windows produced in 1884. The company now includes distribution throughout the United States and specialises in steel-framed windows. Crittall windows are treated with a protective coating but still need routine care. According to the manufacturer, regular maintenance of Crittall windows can extend the window lifespan to match that of your home.

Sponge down your Crittall metal window frames with a soapy water solution every few months. Use dish detergent or another nonalkaline soap to remove dirt and salt that has built up over time. Rinse with clear water from a garden hose and allow the steel window frames to air dry.

Retouch small imperfections in the finish with paint, when needed. Crittall windows are treated with an alkyd, or polyester-based coating. Match the colour and material base as much as possible to keep your windows in like-new condition. Paint only the areas that need touching up without painting over movable parts.

Open the windows in your bathroom while the shower runs to prevent condensation from building up on your windows. If windows in other areas of your home fog up or show signs of rust from frequent condensation, use a fan or other dehumidifier in your home to reduce moisture.

Remove streaks from your windows with a natural stainless steel cleaner: ordinary white vinegar from your pantry. Use a soft cloth to buff the window frames with vinegar and air dry.
