How to give dogs ginger for motion sickness
It is not uncommon for dogs to get sick in cars or on a boat. (patience image by John Sfondilias from

Ginger relieves sickness to the stomach and motion sickness, not only in humans but in dogs too. Ginger capsules, fresh ginger and ginger tea are all options to give to your dog when it has motion sickness. If you suspect your dog is prone to motion sickness, give it ginger about 30 minutes before you travel to allow it to take effect. Although they are not as potent in ginger content, you may also want to keep ginger snaps or ginger cookies with you for the ride in case your dog needs another quick dose before you stop.

  1. 1

Do not feed your dog on the morning that you think it may get motion sickness. This allows the ginger to quickly absorb once it is taken and keeps your dog's stomach empty in case it does get sick.

  2. 2

If you are using fresh ginger or making ginger tea, peel the skin off of the ginger root to expose the yellow-coloured meat. Slice a piece of ginger that is about 1/8-inch thick and cut it into roughly one-inch x 1/4-inch x 1/8-inch slices.

  3. 3

Make tea by putting five to eight slices of the ginger in a small pot with 1/4 cup water. Bring the mixture to a boil and continue to boil for about five minutes. Mix this with about 1/2 cup of wet dog food to mask the ginger flavour and feed it to your dog.

  4. 4

Feed your dog the slices of ginger or ginger capsules by wrapping them in a slice of meat or hot dog. Do not feed your dog too much in order to allow the ginger to absorb quickly, but wrap it in enough food to mask the ginger flavour. Give your dog at least two slices of ginger per 11.3 Kilogram of weight. Follow the dosage directions for the ginger capsules.

  5. 5

Pack a bag of ginger snaps and take them with you for small doses of ginger as needed during the trip.

Tips and warnings

  • Always follow dosage instructions when using ginger capsules.
  • Only use one of the mentioned methods to feed your dog ginger, per trip.
  • Do not give your dog a double dose of ginger, it may make it sicker.
