MSI files are installation scripts written with the Microsoft Installer System. Setup.exe programs are often simply wrappers around an MSI file. These wrappers often include needless data that increases the installer file's size. You can strip the .MSI from a Setup.exe created with the Windows installer system by using the Windows command line.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Open the Windows Start menu and type "Cmd.exe" then press "Enter."

  2. 2

Navigate to the directory containing your ".exe" file. Type: "cd C:\path\to\folder" where "C:\path\to\folder" is the path to the folder with your file.

  3. 3

Type "msiexec /unwrap filename.exe" where "filename.exe" is the name of the .EXE installation file. A new file called "filename.msi" will be created in the same folder.
