The Buffalo TeraStation is a Network Accessible Storage (NAS) device that allows computer users to save data on a remote drive. The TeraStation uses a Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) to ensure the integrity of data on the device. The RAID configuration in a TeraStation NAS consists of multiple hard drives that contain overlapping amounts of data. In the event one of the hard drives fail, the RAID array allows administrators to recover the data from the remaining drives. After replacing a defective hard drive in a Buffalo TeraStation, rebuilding the RAID array to recover data is a relatively simple process.
Insert the replacement drive cartridge in to the TeraStation. Wait for the Buffalo TeraStation to recognise the replacement hard drive. Once the TeraSatation recognises the drive, the display will ready "Set from Web I32 New Disk Ready."
Open the TeraStation Web Admin utility on a connected network computer. Click "Start," "All Programs," "TeraStation," then "Web Admin." After the "Web Admin" browser window opens, click "System," "Storage," then "RAID Array" on the menu bar. Click the "Delete RAID Array" link. Wait a few minutes while the TeraStation deletes the current RAID Array configuration data.
Click "System," "Storage," then "Disks" on the menu bar. Scroll to the physical drive number of the replacement hard drive. For instance, if you replaced the "#3" drive in the TeraStation, select the third drive in the list. Highlight the replacement drive and click the "Format" link. Wait up to 10 minutes while the utility formats the new hard drive.
Click "System," "Storage," then "RAID Array" on the menu bar. Select the desired RAID Array options.
Press the "Function" button on the front of TeraStation console for about three seconds until it beeps. The TeraStation rebuilds the RAID Array and copies image data to the replacement drive as needed.
