Your water meter is a meter that is located outside your home. It measures how much water is being consumed by all of the combined fixtures within your household. Your water utility company reads this meter, typically once a month, to determine how much water your family has used, which helps them figure out exactly how much to charge on your next monthly water bill. If you would like to check how much water your household is using, you will need to locate the water meter.
- Skill level:
Go outside your home, which is where the water meter is typically located, and walk toward your front sidewalk.
Stop in front of your home and turn around so you're facing the house. Look around this area. You're looking for a concrete box that is labelled something like "water" or "CWM" (for city water meter).
Check the side of your house if you can't find the meter in the front of your home. It can also be located in the ground near the side of your house.
Look over the actual side of your house. In some circumstances, you might find your water meter attached to the side of your house, rather than covered within the ground.
