How to Build a Pizza Oven at Home

A homemade pizza oven is a relatively straightforward project that requires basic materials like sand, clay and brick. Although time consuming, once you have crafted your clay pizza oven you can enjoy crispy, fresh pizza directly from your own home. The pizza oven will allow you to kindle wood inside it to create a pizza that is charred with a delicious smoky flavour only a clay oven can produce.

  1. 1

Build the base of the oven. Place the wooden pallet on a flat surface where you wish to have your pizza oven. Place bricks on the pallet to cover the entire surface.

  2. 2

Mold the support for the dome. Since the clay dome of the pizza oven will need to be supported while it is being constructed, use sand to form a mound support. Make the mound of sand as large as you want the inside of the clay oven to be. Wet the sand to make for easy moulding. Cover the mound with wet newspaper.

  3. 3

Create the clay dome. Gently begin layering the clay over the support structure. Place the clay at the base of the mound and work up toward the peak of the dome. When you are finished, the clay pieces should be moulded together so that there are no visible seams. Use a small amount of water to smooth the clay surface with your hands.

  4. 4

Allow the clay dome to dry for approximately three days.

  5. 5

Construct the opening of the oven. Use a utility knife to cut an opening approximately three-fifths of the way up the dome. Cut an arched opening, but do not yet remove the clay. Let the dome rest for three hours.

  6. 6

Remove the clay from the opening and the sand. Gently remove the clay cut from the opening and scoop out the sand inside the dome. The newspaper, which will most likely be stuck to the clay, can remain as it will be burnt off during use.

  7. 7

Fill in any cracks on the dome's exterior. Use extra clay to cover and smooth over any cracks that have appeared on the surface of the dome. Allow to dry completely for two days.
