With the GPS capabilities of an iPhone, you can send out your current location to friends and also pinpoint their locations -- with their permission, of course. A number of applications afford you the ability to see exactly where your friends and family currently are. Once you can see where your friends are, the Google map service on the iPhone can give you exact directions.

Use Loci GPS tracking if you are looking for a tracking device that allows for a bit more privacy than other tracking apps. With Loci, each tracking session must be approved by the person being tracked. After logging into the application, enter your contacts' names and e-mail addresses into the contact list; if the contact does not currently use the Loci service, they will be sent an invitation. A contact has to approve the use of Loci on their own device in order for you to track them. When you want to track a contact, simply select their name from the contact list and request their location -- or send them yours. Once your contact approves the request, a Google map appears with the exact address of their current location.
Get Google Latitude from the iTunes app store if you want a program that will allow you to track contacts on your desktop or laptop in addition to on your iPhone. Send your contacts a request to see their location, and, provided they approve the request, you will always be able see their exact location whenever they have the service enabled on their phone or computer. On the iPhone, the Google Latitude app can run in the background at all times, so you do not currently have to be looking at the app to allow your friends to see where you are. In addition to seeing a friend's location, the app will tell you exactly how many miles away from you they are and has the capability to show a satellite map. The application allows users to manually update their location, or have their current coordinates automatically updated as they travel.
Use the Loopt application if you have other friends that are using the service, or who tend to check-in on Facebook. In addition to tracking the location of your contacts, the service also allows you to see points of interest that have been visited the most by your friends. If a particular restaurant in your neighbourhood has been frequented by your contacts, for example, the application will alert you that the business is a "hot spot." Loopt shows you where people are on a Google map, and also allows you to initiate a text message conversation from within the app. In addition, you can share your location on Facebook and Twitter by logging into your social networking accounts from the Loopt application's home screen.
