How to Paint a Singer Sewing Machine
Singer has been manufacturing sewing machines since the middle of the 19th century. (treadle sewing machine image by DSL from Fotolia.com)

Instead of throwing out that antique Singer sewing machine that's been collecting dust in your attic, you can repaint it and display it around your house as a decorative piece. After all, it would be a pity to throw away what might be a family heirloom. You can find all of the materials you'll need to finish the job at a neighbourhood crafts store. So let's get started.

Instructions

  1. 1

Lay down several layers of newspapers around your work area. Try to pick a well-ventilated workspace or work outdoors. Be sure to put on a pair of medical gloves before you start to paint.

  2. 2

Place the sewing machine atop the newspapers, and place painter's tape on any areas that you don't want to paint. Clean the machine with white spirit.

  3. 3

Lay down a layer of paint stripper to remove any old decorative paint. Go over the surface of the sewing machine lightly with steel wool to make help the paint adhere better. You can also use a low-grit sandpaper for this part. Apply a coat of primer onto the machine and allow it to dry for an hour.

  4. 4

Apply a first layer of paint once the primer has dried. Once again, allow the machine to dry for another hour before applying a second coat. Wait for the second coat to dry before stripping away the tape and clean up your work area.
