If you want to create an Olympic torch display to celebrate the games or to provide themed decor for your next party, you can make your own flameless torch centrepiece. Implementing a flameless, battery-operated LED candle that flickers provides an ongoing flame that resembles a torch without the fire hazard of a real flame or hassle of having to relight a wick. You can place the flameless candles in orange and amber-coloured glass or frosted glass candle holders so that the flickering light of the candle creates a torch-like glow that lasts up to 15 hours.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • Platter or cake dome
  • Flameless, flickering, battery-operated LED candle(s)
  • Red, orange, yellow, green and blue construction paper
  • Olympic themed decorations (optional)
  • Orange or amber glass or frosted glass candle holder(s)

  1. 1

Purchase a gold, silver or bronze circular platter or cake dome (for height) to represent the Olympic-medal colours. Buy a large orange or gold flameless, flickering LED candle. Purchase Olympic-influenced accessories such as mini international flags. Buy red, gold, blue, green and orange construction paper.

  2. 2

Place your bowl onto the construction paper so that it is upside down. Trace around the outside of the bowl to create a large circle. Cut out the circle.

  3. 3

Put a smaller bowl or circular object inside the first circle you drew. Trace the object. Cut the interior circle out to create an Olympic ring. Follow this procedure for your red, gold, green, blue and orange paper to add to the Olympic torch themed centrepiece.

  4. 4

Put your platter or cake dome on a flat surface. Center your orange or amber candle holder on the platter. Turn on your LED flameless, flickering candle. Put it in the candle holder to mimic an Olympic torch. The orange or amber from the transparent glass or frosted glass sides of the candle holder with illuminate, yielding a glow like a torch.

  5. 5

Encircle the torch or platter with decorations such as Olympic rings, medals and mini international flags. (Optional)
